British Flowers Week: Why Homegrown Blooms Are Beautiful for You, the Planet, and the Soul16th–22nd June 2025

Hello lovely flower friends,

British Flowers Week is just around the corner (16th–22nd June), and I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate something so close to my heart — seasonal, locally grown flowers, and the joy they bring in every way.

As a florist, grower, and flower school based here in beautiful Sussex, I see first-hand how much difference a British-grown bouquet can make — not just for the planet, but for our mental well-being and sense of connection too.

So I wanted to share a little bit about why this week means so much, and why British blooms are worth celebrating all year round.

🌼 What Makes British Flowers So Special?

There’s a certain kind of magic that comes from flowers grown on home soil. From the first delicate scent of sweet peas to the vibrant colours of cornflowers, cosmos and dahlias — British flowers have a charm, wildness, and honesty that’s hard to match.

Unlike many imported flowers, which are flown thousands of miles and often grown intensively, our British blooms are:

  • Fresher and more fragrant (you really can smell the difference!)

  • Kinder to the planet with fewer air miles and less packaging

  • Grown with love, often on small farms or cutting gardens like mine

  • Buzzing with life — supporting bees, butterflies and biodiversity

When you buy locally grown flowers, you’re not just buying a bunch — you’re supporting sustainable practices, British growers, and a future that’s blooming greener.

🌸 Growing and Picking Flowers: A Simple Joy

One of my absolute favourite things is stepping into the flower field in the early morning, coffee in hand, listening to the bees hum as I start picking the day’s blooms. It’s peaceful, grounding, and full of little surprises — like the first rose of summer or a perfect frilly poppy that’s just opened.

If you’ve ever grown or picked your own flowers, even just a pot of sweet peas by the back door, you’ll know what I mean. It’s more than gardening — it’s therapy.

Spending time with flowers can:

  • Calm a busy mind

  • Boost your mood

  • Spark creativity

  • Remind you to slow down and notice the beauty around you

There’s something deeply nourishing about watching something grow, knowing you had a hand in it — and then bringing it indoors to enjoy.

💐 Flowers in the Home = Flowers in the Heart

We often think of flowers as a luxury, but I really believe they’re essential. A simple jam jar of garden flowers on the kitchen table can completely lift a room — and your spirits.

Studies have shown that flowers in the home can reduce stress, boost happiness, and even help you concentrate better. But honestly, you don’t need a study to know that flowers just make people feel good.

That’s the real magic of them.
